Learning Linux

Hello my name is Mark and I am a computeraholic. I have always been fascinated by all things related to computers. At an early age I remember "hacking" Windows 95 and trying to figure out everything that was possible with it. This resulted in several complete system crashes, several restores, more than one call to a help center, hours of reinstalling software, etc. But, as they say, you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs. All of the playing around that I have done has given me valuable experience in all things related to computers.

Having said that, the one thing I have never played around with is Linux. I have always been a Windows guy. This is mainly because we currently live in a Windows dominated world. However, I think that is changing. Today more and more servers are run on Linux, Ubuntu has stormed onto the seen like a bat out of hell, more computers are being sold with Linux on them, and people are slowly beginning to adopt the operating system.

I generally consider myself "ahead of the game", and I feel as if I am being caught with my pants down when it comes to Linux. So, to remedy the situation I went out and got myself an older computer and installed Ubuntu on it. I have agreed to document my learning Linux progress on this site. Hopefully as I learn, anyone who reads this can learn with me.

When I first started playing

When I first started playing around with Linux a couple of years ago, the biggest hurdle for me was finding out what to do. It seems like there is no set way to handle certain problems. If you encounter a problem that a search doesn't turn up an answer for, you end up posting your problem in a forum and waiting for an answer. I also find that many solutions require going to the command line. I'm not very comfortable with this. I would rather be able to handle all settings and problems from the GUI.
